Health Benefits
Chapman River Extra Virgin Olive Oil is ethically and sustainably made, and is a healthy alternative to other vegetable oils, from paddock to plate.
Extra virgin olive oil, by its nature, has more health benefits than other vegetable oils. Despite being high in fat, the fat content found in our olive oil is mainly comprised of monounsaturated fatty acids, also known as MUFAs. These fats have been shown to lower cholesterol levels, and the main component of these fatty acids, called oleic acid, has been shown to reduce inflammation.
Olive oil’s anti-inflammatory properties have multiple health benefits. Illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and Alzheimer’s often have complications due to inflammation, and olive oil naturally reduces inflammation, and the antioxidants in olive oil hinder the proteins that cause inflammation.
In particular, olive oil has been linked to positive effects in people with diabetes and heart disease. By lowering inflammation, and naturally decreasing the levels of LDL cholesterol, olive oil lowers blood pressure and improves the lining of blood vessels, which can prevent clots and build up. Studies on the Mediterranean diet have shown that diets that contain regular olive oil consumption significantly reduce the risk of heart disease.
Despite the high-fat content in olive oil, the study on the Mediterranean diet demonstrated that olive oil did not cause weight gain, and doesn’t contribute to obesity. Another study showed that because of the high antioxidants in olive oil, it can contribute to weight loss instead. Olive oil has been linked to positive effects on insulin levels and blood sugar levels, which benefits those with diabetes, particularly type 2. In fact, a diet high in olive oil can reduce the risk of diabetes by 40%.
Olive oil doesn’t just help your body, it can also help your mind. A balanced Mediterranean diet that is high in olive oil has shown to reduce the severity of mental illness, including depression, and it also aids in the healing process of the nervous system, which can increase the levels of serotonin and dopamine, the happiness hormones.
You can add more olive oil to your diet by having it on a slice of bread with dukkah, drizzling it over a Mediterranean salad, or simply by cooking with it. The natural fats and acids within olive oil have a high tolerance to heat, so you don’t have to worry about burning out the good nutrients every time you cook.
As well as from the natural health benefits that olive oil contains, Chapman River Extra Virgin Olive Oil is also made with care and consideration, ensuring that the best quality olives go into our olive oil. Our olive trees are pruned and fertilized to ensure that the tree is healthy, and the quality of the olives is high. As we own our own olive press, we have the luxury to be able to press our olives within 24 hours of being picked; and mostly on the same day ensuring that they are fresh.
